Alibag is a very picturesque town, situated along the west coast of India. It is a municipal council that falls under the Konkan region of Maharashtra and is counted amongst the popular weekend getaways from Mumbai. The town forms a part of the Raigad district of Maharashtra and also serves as its headquarters. Most of the high society people of Mumbai have bungalows or farmhouses in Alibag, where they come to escape from the mundane tensions of routine life, every now and then.

The Hill Resort

The coastal town of Alibag dates back to the 17th century, when it was developed Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the Naval Chief of Shivaji Maharaj. It is situated to the south of the Mumbai city, at a distance of approximately 35 Km. One of the major attractions of the town is its serene beach, which boasts of exotic locales and azure blue waters. Along with that, it has nine other beaches, situated in the vicinity. All these beaches combine to boost the travel and tourism industry of Alibag.

Since Mumbai is the closest to Alibag, the shopping streets and stores make a great place for shopping! From ready-made garments, including export surplus apparel, watches, excellent kohlapuriz, bags, antiques, junk jewellery, leather items to furniture and grocery items- all can be picked up at throwaway prices.

Activities

Relax and sunbathe on the beach - build some sandcastles if you wish. Swim only if you are very proficient - there is a strong undercurrent here. Though Alibag is great for sun-bathing and the beach, the waters are not very safe for anything more than paddling. There is a strong undercurrent and it is best not to swim out to sea unless you are a proficient swimmer. Hopefully, the Alibag magic and will make you want to spend your time lazing on the beach and not doing much else.

Location Details

Alibag is located at 140 Km from Pune in Raigad District. It is an idyllic town on the western coast of India known as the Konkan region. Situated very close to tip across the narrow strip of the Arabian Sea, this is a wonderful place for a day's relaxation. Besides its natural beauty, Alibag also has historical monuments, forts, temples and beautiful beaches.

Rail

Nearest railway station from Alibag is Pen at 28 Km on Konkan railway line. Panvel is another convenient railway station at 60 Km on Konkan railway line. Road: Alibag is best connected to Mumbai, Borivali, Pune, Thane and Kalyan etc by road. Ferry & Catamarans.

Best Season to Visit/Weather

Alibag throughout the year. For those who relish boating, the best time to visit is from October to May, as the launch is not recommended during the monsoons (June-September).

Tourist places near Alibag

Then, there is the Kulaba Fort, situated just off the main seashore of the town. However, it can be visited only during low tide, when the waters have receded back to the sea. Even though Alibag has much to offer in terms of tourism, it is visited by a moderate number of visitors and this is what adds to its charm. The serenity that this coastal town offers is hardly available in most of the other beach resorts of India. So, come and explore the sun and sand at the coastal town of Alibagh and go back with memories to last a lifetime.
