Assam is the gateway to the North-East and is dominated by the mighty river Brahmaputra that has its origin in Tibet. Indeed, a large part of the state is located in the narrow valley that the river has created over the ages. The state's population includes a startling mix of Dravidians and Aryans and Tibeto-Burmans. Assam is perhaps best known for two things: tea and the one-horned Rhinoceros, which is found in large numbers at Kaziranga National Park. The capital of Assam, is Dispur, a suburb of Guwahati in 1972. The uneven topography of the land, full of hills, plains and rivers might, therefore, have contributed to her name. Assam was once upon a time the original home of Tantricism in India. The Shakti temples like Kamakhya in Guwahati and Kechaikhati near Sadiya are proof to this. While veneration to Shiva largely prevailed in the early period, the other goddess cult gained ground subsequently. In fact, at one time, Assam came to be identified with Tantrik Shaktism, especially centering around the Kamakhya temple. Even today, Shiva and the Mother Goddess are venerated in various forms at the folk level in large sections of the Assamese society, both tribal and non-tribal.

Jatinga

Jatinga is situated 9 kms from Haflong town, the District Head Quarter of North Cachar Hills. Jatinga is famous for bird mystery. Diphu

Diphu ia a superb hill station of Assam, located at a distance of 271 km from Guwahati. It serves as the headquarters for Karbi Anglong District. It has a well developed infrastructure and is connected by NF Railway and State Transport Buses from Guwahati. The nearest airport is Dimapur, at a distance of 54 km.

Umrangshu

Umrangshu is one of the well-known hill-stations of Assam, which is located exactly at the border of Assam and Meghalaya. It is about 112 km from Haflong and lies against the superb background of the exquisite North Cacher Hill region. It is located at a distance of 224 km from Guwahati, the commercial city of Assam. The hill-station deserves a commendable importance as one of the must-visit places of Assam.

Maibong

Located on the Bank of Mahur river and 47 Km from Haflong. Maibong once flourished as the capital of Dimasa, Kachari Kingdom. Stone house and temple of Kachari king can be seen at Maibong.

Haflong

Up in the rugged terrains stands Assam's only hill station Haflong where one can see the rainbow down below. It is the district Head Quarter of North Cachar hills District. A beautiful big lake "Haflong Lake" is located in the heart of the Haflong town. Haflong is 345 kms by road from Guwahati and connected by N. F. Railway and State Transport Buses ply from Guwahati.
