The Hill Resort

Kottayam is on the 'backwater' circuit. Kottayam is dominated by the presence of the Syrian Christian community and is known for it's churches. There are direct buses from here to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and ferries to Alappuzha.

History

The hill resort of Peermade used to be the summer retreat of the rulers of Travancore. The name 'Peermade' means "hill of peer".

About 43 Km away from Peermade is the famous Periyar wildlife Sanctuary. It has elephants, tigers, sambhar and many other animals, which attract people from all over. About 4 Km from Peermade are the Thrissanku hills, which is a great place to go on long walks and enjoy the beautiful sunset and sunrise.
